Status: Exploration. Individual cognitive architecture development is shaped by social structural position — hierarchy, relational networks, institutional access. The same cognitive substrate develops differently depending on WHERE in the cultural ecosystem the individual is embedded. 1. The problem with a uniform ontogenetic trajectory

The previous trajectory analysis positioned "a human" developing from birth to adulthood as if the trajectory is the same for everyone. But it's not. A child born into a scholarly family in Song Dynasty China develops a DIFFERENT cognitive architecture than a child born into a peasant family in the same society, even though they share:

What differs is their POSITION within the cultural ecosystem — which parts of the ecosystem they have access to, which social structures they navigate, which developmental paths are available and rewarded.

This means the cultural ecosystem isn't just something individuals contribute to at maturity — it's the DEVELOPMENTAL CONTEXT that shapes which cognitive architecture primitives get elaborated. The CE → CA feedback (cultural selection shaping individual development) operates from birth, through social position.


2. What social position determines

Social position within the cultural ecosystem can be decomposed into access dimensions:

These access dimensions are THEMSELVES structured by the cultural ecosystem's primitives — resource access depends on Ex (exchange), knowledge access depends on Tr (transmission), institutional position depends on Gv (governance) and Cd (coordination). The CE primitives CREATE the access structure that shapes individual CA development.


3. Trajectories by social position — Agrarian Civilization (Epoch 3)

Taking one epoch (Epoch 3, ~3000 BCE to ~500 CE) where social stratification is sharp and well-documented, and tracing multiple trajectories within the SAME civilizational context.

Peaks: Dc4, Pl4, Co4, Jd4, Si4, Id4 — the GOVERNANCE CLUSTER. The architecture optimizes for exercising authority, managing relationships, and making consequential decisions.

Valleys: Sk2-3 (doesn't need manual skills), Cr2-3 (institutional conservatism limits creativity).

3.2 Scribe/Scholar (literate administrator, priest-scholar)

CA at maturity: (Kw4, Sk3-4, Dc2-3, Pl3, Co3-4, Jd3-4, Cr3, Si2-3, Id3-4)

What social position provides:

Peaks: Kw4 — the KNOWLEDGE SPECIALIST. The architecture optimizes for accumulating, organizing, and applying knowledge. This is the first "professional cognitive architecture" — optimized for a specific institutional function.

Valleys: Dc2-3 (executes others' decisions), Si2-3 (narrower social world).

3.3 Merchant/Trader

CA at maturity: (Kw3, Sk3, Dc3-4, Pl3-4, Co3-4, Jd3, Cr3, Si3-4, Id3)

What social position provides:

Peaks: Dc3-4, Pl3-4, Si3-4, Co3-4 — the EXCHANGE CLUSTER. The architecture optimizes for navigating uncertainty, managing relationships, and facilitating exchange. Notably BALANCED — no extreme peaks or valleys.

Valleys: Nothing dramatically low — the merchant develops broadly because trade requires diverse capabilities.

3.4 Artisan/Craftsperson (smith, potter, weaver, builder)

CA at maturity: (Kw2-3, Sk4, Dc2, Pl2-3, Co2, Jd2, Cr3-4, Si2, Id3)

What social position provides:

Peaks: Sk4, Cr3-4 — the CRAFT CLUSTER. The architecture optimizes for embodied expertise and creative production. This is the other major "professional cognitive architecture" alongside the scholar — optimized for MAKING rather than KNOWING.

Valleys: Co2, Si2, Dc2 — the artisan's social world is narrow and decision scope limited.

3.5 Agricultural Laborer (peasant farmer)

CA at maturity: (Kw2, Sk2-3, Dc1-2, Pl2, Co2, Jd2, Cr1-2, Si2, Id2)

What social position provides:

Peaks: None dramatic — uniformly moderate. The agricultural laborer develops a GENERALIST LOW-LEVEL architecture. No primitive is pushed to its ceiling because the social position doesn't demand or reward deep development in any dimension.

Valleys: Dc1-2 (decisions made by others), Cr1-2 (innovation penalized in subsistence farming — risk aversion).

3.6 Enslaved/Excluded Person

CA at maturity: (Kw1-2, Sk2-3, Dc0-1, Pl1, Co1-2, Jd1-2, Cr1, Si2-3, Id1-2)

What social position provides:

Peaks: Si2-3 relative to other primitives — social intelligence is a survival necessity when you have no formal power.

Valleys: Dc0-1, Pl1, Cr1, Id1-2 — the social position SYSTEMATICALLY SUPPRESSES agency, planning, creativity, and identity. The cognitive substrate is Full (same as everyone else), but the architecture is constrained to a fraction of its potential.

Structural insight: This is the most dramatic demonstration that the cultural ecosystem's SOCIAL STRUCTURE constrains individual cognitive architecture development. Same NH (Full), same CS (Full), same Cx (same civilization) — but radically different CA because social position gates access to developmental opportunities.

5. What this reveals

5.1 Social position creates ARCHITECTURE PROFILES, not just levels

Each social position doesn't just produce a higher or lower architecture — it produces a DISTINCTIVE PROFILE with specific peaks and valleys:

These profiles are not arbitrary — they're SHAPED by the demands and opportunities of each position. The cultural ecosystem's structure creates NICHES for cognitive architecture development, the same way a biological ecosystem creates niches for organism architecture.

5.2 The CE primitives create the access structure

5.3 The Gv primitive is the master gate

Governance (Gv) determines the STRUCTURE OF ACCESS to all other primitives. The governance system decides:

This is why the enslaved person's trajectory is so dramatically different — governance assigns them a position with near-zero access to developmental opportunities. The SAME cognitive substrate (Full) is capped at CA total ~13 instead of ~32 because governance gates access.

This means Gv is not just an ecosystem primitive — it's the mechanism through which the ecosystem shapes individual architecture. The Gv structure IS the cognitive development context for individuals.

5.4 Mobility as architecture reshaping

Social mobility — movement between positions — reshapes cognitive architecture:

Social mobility IS cognitive architecture reshaping — the new position demands new primitive levels, and the individual either develops them or fails in the new role.

5.5 Modern context WIDENS access but doesn't eliminate hierarchy

The FLOOR has risen (modern peasant equivalent starts at ~20 not ~17; modern excluded person at ~18 not ~13). But the SHAPE of hierarchy-driven architecture profiles persists. Social structure still creates cognitive niches.


6. Implications for the framework

6.1 CA development is CE-mediated

Individual cognitive architecture development is not just substrate-to-architecture (CS → CA via cognitive development bridge). It's substrate-to-architecture-WITHIN-SOCIAL-STRUCTURE. The cultural ecosystem's governance, coordination, and diversity primitives create the ACCESS STRUCTURE that determines which CA primitives get developed.

The proper model is:

Cultural ecosystems reproduce their own structure by shaping individual cognitive architectures to fit existing positions. A governance system that requires Jd4 administrators educates some individuals to Jd4, creating people who perpetuate the governance system. This IS social reproduction — the ecosystem shapes the minds that maintain the ecosystem.

The feedback loop:

CE (social structure) → shapes → CA development → individuals → maintain/modify → CE

When this loop is STABLE: social reproduction. When it's DISRUPTED (new technology, invasion, revolution, demographic shift): social change. The stability/disruption dynamics are captured by the cultural ecosystem's Sc (succession) primitive.

6.3 Unified manifestation needs a social position parameter

The unified manifestation template should include social position as a modifier on CA:

Social position isn't just hierarchical (up/down in power). It also has a RELATIONAL structure dimension — the topology of an individual's social network.

Granovetter's insight formalized: Weak ties (sparse, bridging connections) provide non-redundant information → they drive Kw breadth and Cr (novel combinations). Strong ties (dense, bonded connections) provide trust and norm reinforcement → they drive Jd and Id (stable values, clear identity).

The same hierarchical position with DIFFERENT relational structures produces different architectures:

8. Historical test — does this explain known patterns?

8.1 The Athenian democracy vs Spartan oligarchy

Same epoch, same region (Greek Epoch 3), different social structures:

Baghdad ~800-1200 CE. Social position: scholar in the House of Wisdom.

CA profile: Kw4-Full (polymaths — al-Khwarizmi in mathematics+astronomy, Ibn Sina in medicine+philosophy), Cr4 (genuine innovation — algebra, optics, surgical techniques), Co4 (multi-lingual, cross-cultural), Sk3-4 (observational, experimental).

What made this CA profile possible: BRIDGING relational structure (scholars connecting Greek, Persian, Indian, and Arabic traditions) + institutional support (Gv patronage) + physical connectivity (Ct_conn4 via Silk Road) + transmission infrastructure (Tr4 via translation movement). Remove ANY of these social structural features and the extraordinary CA development doesn't happen.

8.3 The Renaissance artisan-scholar

Florence ~1400-1500 CE. Leonardo da Vinci's social position: artisan origin, patron-supported polymath.

CA profile: Sk4 (painting, engineering, anatomy), Kw4 (natural philosophy, mathematics, anatomy), Cr4-Full (legendary creative output), Co3-4 (patron communication, apprentice teaching), Si3-4 (navigating patronage politics), Dc3 (professional decisions), Jd3 (aesthetic judgment).

What made this possible: social MOBILITY (artisan to intellectual) + BRIDGING position (craft + scholarship) + patronage system (Gv providing resources for creative freedom) + dense innovative community (Dv4 local diversity). The CA profile is SHAPED by the social structural position, not just by individual talent.


9. Conclusions

9.1 Social structure is the MEDIUM of cognitive architecture development

The cultural ecosystem doesn't just receive cognitive architecture contributions — it SHAPES which architectures develop. Social hierarchy, relational networks, institutional access, and governance structure create the ACCESS landscape that determines individual CA profiles.

9.2 Three factors determine individual CA

Social positions create COGNITIVE NICHES — specific combinations of CA primitives demanded and rewarded. These niches persist across epochs, with the FLOOR rising as context improves.

9.4 Relational structure adds a second dimension

Beyond hierarchy (vertical position), relational network topology (horizontal structure) shapes CA development. Dense networks reinforce norms (Jd, Id). Bridging networks provide novel inputs (Kw, Cr). Centrality provides influence (Co, Si, Dc).

9.5 The CE → CA feedback IS social reproduction

Cultural ecosystems reproduce their structure by shaping cognitive architectures that maintain the structure. This feedback loop explains both stability (social reproduction) and change (when disruption reshapes access).
