Status: Exploration. Positioning the same system at MULTIPLE time points across all 36 primitive dimensions (6 NH + 6 CS + 9 CA + 9 CE + 6 Cx). Shows how systems move through the lattice space over time. 1. Two trajectories

1.1 Civilizational trajectory

Human civilization from deep history to present — the COLLECTIVE trajectory. Neural hardware and cognitive substrate are FIXED (species-level, unchanged over historical time). Context and cultural ecosystem CHANGE. Cognitive architecture changes at the population distribution level (what the average person develops), not at the species ceiling.

1.2 Ontogenetic trajectory

A single human from birth to adulthood — the INDIVIDUAL trajectory. Neural hardware changes (maturation). Cognitive substrate changes (development). Cognitive architecture changes (capability growth). Cultural ecosystem participation changes (from zero to full). Context is relatively fixed (the individual inherits their era's context).

2. Civilizational Trajectory

2.1 The epochs

Epoch 0: Pre-symbolic (~300-100 Kya) Anatomically modern humans with Full neural hardware but before Full symbolic language.

NH: (Nr-Full, Sy-Full, Og-Full, Ol-Full, Mb-Full, Td-Full) — FIXED from here on
CS: (Rp-Full, Ct-Full, As-Full, Sq-Full, Sy_sym3-4, Ev-Full) — nearly Full, Sy_sym approaching Full
CA: [population average] (Kw2-3, Sk3-4, Dc3, Pl3, Co3, Jd2-3, Cr3, Si3-4, Id3)
CE: (Pr1, Ex1, Tr1-2, Dv1, Cd2, Gv1, Te1, Sc0-1, Ct_conn0-1)
Cx: (Rb1, Gs variable, Po1, If0, Ks1, Th2)

What's happening: Hardware and most of the substrate are at ceiling. But Sy_sym hasn't reached Full yet — language is developing, becoming recursive. Cultural ecosystem at floor. Context has no accumulated infrastructure or knowledge stock.

Epoch 1: Symbolic revolution (~100-50 Kya) Full recursive language achieved. Behavioral modernity — art, burial, long-distance trade.

NH: (all Full) — unchanged
CS: (all Full) — Sy_sym reaches Full
CA: [population average] (Kw3, Sk4, Dc3, Pl3, Co4, Jd3, Cr3, Si4, Id3-4)
CE: (Pr1-2, Ex1-2, Tr2, Dv1-2, Cd2, Gv1, Te1-2, Sc1, Ct_conn1)
Cx: (Rb1, Gs variable, Po1, If0-1, Ks1, Th2)

What changed: Sy_sym → Full. This unlocks Tr2 (oral tradition becomes robust — myths, genealogies, accumulated ecological knowledge transmissible through generations). Long-distance trade (Ex1-2) appears. Shell beads, ochre, and cave paintings indicate symbolic behavior. Architecture peaks: Co4 (full language capacity) and Si4 (complex social navigation in 30-150 person bands).

Epoch 2: Agricultural revolution (~10 Kya) Domestication of plants and animals. Permanent settlement. Surplus.

NH: (all Full) — unchanged
CS: (all Full) — unchanged
CA: [population average] (Kw3, Sk3, Dc3, Pl3, Co4, Jd3, Cr2-3, Si3-4, Id3)
CE: (Pr2, Ex2, Tr2, Dv2, Cd2-3, Gv2, Te2, Sc1, Ct_conn1-2)
Cx: (Rb2, Gs variable, Po2, If2, Ks1, Th2-3)

What changed: Rb1→Rb2 (agricultural surplus). This CASCADES: Po1→Po2 (villages of 200-5000), If0→If2 (irrigation, storage, permanent buildings), Te1→Te2 (fixed settlements), Dv1→Dv2 (occupational specialization — potter, smith, healer). Pr1→Pr2 (agricultural production).

But: Ks still at 1 (oral tradition only). No writing yet. Cultural accumulation limited by oral transmission bandwidth.

Note CA average Sk drops from 4 to 3 — farmers are LESS skilled per individual than hunter-gatherers (who needed expert tracking, navigation, foraging). The surplus enables specialists (some at Sk4+) but the average drops. This is the cost of agricultural transition for individual capability.

Epoch 3: Urban/literate revolution (~5 Kya) Cities, writing, codified law, professional administration.

NH: (all Full) — unchanged
CS: (all Full) — unchanged
CA: [population average] (Kw3, Sk2-3, Dc3, Pl3, Co3-4, Jd3, Cr2, Si3, Id3)
CE: (Pr3, Ex3, Tr3, Dv3, Cd3, Gv3, Te3, Sc2, Ct_conn2-3)
Cx: (Rb2-3, Gs variable, Po3, If3, Ks2, Th3)

What changed: Ks1→Ks2 (WRITING). This is the single most consequential context transition. Writing enables: Tr3 (persistent transmission — knowledge survives beyond living memory), Gv3 (codified law — Hammurabi, Roman law), Cd3 (institutional coordination — bureaucracy, taxation), Sc2 (generational change becomes tracked and deliberate).

If2→If3 (urban infrastructure — cities, roads, aqueducts). Po2→Po3 (urban populations of 10K-1M). Pr3 (craft/manufacturing specialization). Ex3 (currency-mediated market exchange).

The Ks1→Ks2 transition unlocks the INSTITUTIONAL cascade: writing → law → bureaucracy → taxation → professional administration → empire. Without writing, none of this is possible.

Epoch 4: Pre-modern (~500 years ago) Printing press, scientific method, early globalization.

NH: (all Full) — unchanged
CS: (all Full) — unchanged
CA: [population average] (Kw3, Sk2-3, Dc3, Pl3, Co3, Jd3, Cr2-3, Si3, Id3)
CE: (Pr3-4, Ex4, Tr4, Dv3-4, Cd3-4, Gv3-4, Te4, Sc3-4, Ct_conn4)
Cx: (Rb3, Gs4, Po3-4, If3-4, Ks3, Th3)

What changed: Ks2→Ks3 (PRINTING). Gutenberg ~1440. Mass-reproducible knowledge. This cascades: Tr4 (mass transmission — books reach thousands), Sc3-4 (deliberate innovation becomes possible — scientific method, systematic experimentation), Ct_conn4 (colonial/imperial networks span the globe).

The Ks2→Ks3 transition unlocks the SCIENTIFIC cascade: printed books → accumulated specialized knowledge → scientific societies → systematic method → accelerating discovery. Note the same pattern as Ks1→Ks2 — a knowledge stock transition triggers an institutional cascade.

Epoch 5: Industrial (~200 years ago) Fossil fuels, factories, mass society.

NH: (all Full) — unchanged
CS: (all Full) — unchanged
CA: [population average] (Kw3, Sk2-3, Dc3, Pl3, Co3, Jd3, Cr2, Si3, Id3)
CE: (Pr4, Ex4, Tr4, Dv4, Cd4, Gv4, Te4, Sc4, Ct_conn4)
Cx: (Rb4, Gs4, Po4, If4, Ks3-4, Th3)

What changed: Rb3→Rb4 (FOSSIL FUELS). Energy per capita increases by orders of magnitude. This cascades: Pr4 (industrial mass production), Po4 (national populations), If4 (railways, telegraph, power grid), Dv4 (high specialization — hundreds of occupations), Gv4 (constitutional governance, democratic accountability).

The Rb3→Rb4 transition unlocks the INDUSTRIAL cascade: energy → factories → mass production → urbanization → mass education → mass communication → democratic governance. Energy enables everything.

Epoch 6: Digital/knowledge (~30 years ago to present) Internet, globalization, knowledge economy.

NH: (all Full) — unchanged
CS: (all Full) — unchanged
CA: [population average] (Kw3-4, Sk3, Dc3, Pl3, Co3-4, Jd3, Cr2-3, Si3, Id3)
CE: (Pr-Full, Ex-Full, Tr-Full, Dv4-Full, Cd4, Gv4, Te-Full, Sc4-Full, Ct_conn-Full)
Cx: (Rb4-Full, Gs-Full, Po-Full, If-Full, Ks-Full, Th3-4)

What changed: Ks3-4→Ks-Full (INTERNET + DIGITIZATION). All human knowledge searchable, accessible, instantly transmissible. If4→If-Full (digital infrastructure — internet, cloud computing, satellite networks). Ct_conn→Full (global real-time connectivity).

The Ks-Full transition unlocks: Tr-Full (any knowledge instantly transmissible to anyone), Pr-Full (knowledge economy — information as the primary production input), Sc4-Full (innovation rate itself accelerating — AI amplifying research).

Note: Gv4, NOT Gv-Full. Governance has NOT kept pace with other dimensions. International institutions are Gv3-4; adaptive evidence-based global governance (Gv-Full) doesn't exist. This lag IS the defining challenge of the current epoch — technological capability has outpaced institutional capacity.

2.3 What the trajectory reveals

The NH and CS lines are FLAT. Neural hardware and cognitive substrate haven't changed since Epoch 1. All civilizational development happens in the CONTEXT and CULTURAL ECOSYSTEM dimensions. The biological substrate is static; the cultural superstructure is dynamic.

Three context primitives drive the transitions:

  1. Rb (resources): Epochs 2 and 5 (agriculture, fossil fuels)
  2. Ks (knowledge stock): Epochs 3, 4, and 6 (writing, printing, internet)
  3. Po, If, Gs cascade FROM Rb and Ks, they don't drive independently

The pattern: each epoch is triggered by ONE context transition that cascades through the cultural ecosystem. The transitions alternate between resource transitions (Rb) and knowledge transitions (Ks):

Epoch 2: Rb-transition (agriculture)
Epoch 3: Ks-transition (writing)
Epoch 4: Ks-transition (printing)
Epoch 5: Rb-transition (fossil fuels)
Epoch 6: Ks-transition (internet)

Resource and knowledge transitions alternate as the driving force. Each Ks transition accelerates faster than the previous (writing took ~5000 years to mature; printing took ~500; internet took ~30). The Ks-Tr feedback loop IS the acceleration mechanism.

The governance gap is structural, not accidental. Gv is stuck at 4 while other ecosystem primitives reach Full. Why? Governance requires COORDINATION (Cd) across the FULL scale of the community. When the community was a city-state (Po3), Gv3 matched. When the community became nations (Po4), Gv4 caught up. Now the community is global (Po-Full), but Gv hasn't reached Full — global adaptive governance doesn't exist. Governance always LAGS because it requires coordinating the CURRENT-scale population, which is always larger than the scale governance was designed for.

The CA average barely moves. The average person's cognitive architecture is roughly the same from Epoch 1 to Epoch 6 (Kw3, Sk2-3, Dc3, Pl3, Co3-4, Jd3, Cr2-3, Si3, Id3). What changes is the MAXIMUM (specialists reach higher levels with more infrastructure support) and the DISTRIBUTION (more people reach Kw3-4 with universal education). But the median cognitive architecture is remarkably stable. Civilizational development is NOT about making individuals smarter — it's about ACCUMULATING CONTEXT that amplifies what existing cognitive architectures can do.

3. Ontogenetic Trajectory (Individual Human, Modern Context)

3.1 The epochs of individual development

Birth (day 0)

NH: (Nr-Full, Sy3, Og4, Ol2-3, Mb4, Td-Full)
CS: (Rp1, Ct1, As0-1, Sq0-1, Sy_sym0, Ev1)
CA: (Kw0, Sk0, Dc0, Pl0, Co0, Jd0, Cr0, Si0, Id0)
CE participation: none
Cx: [inherited from era — modern: Rb-Full, Gs-Full, Po-Full, If-Full, Ks-Full, Th3]

Neural hardware is near-complete anatomically but not fully operational. Synapses at 3 (massive overproduction, pruning hasn't occurred). Oscillations at 2-3 (theta-dominant, gamma immature). Cognitive substrate at floor — sensory images (Rp1), basic categorization (Ct1), hedonic evaluation (Ev1), everything else near-zero. Architecture entirely absent. Context inherited from era.

6 months

NH: (Nr-Full, Sy3-4, Og4, Ol3, Mb4, Td-Full)
CS: (Rp2, Ct1-2, As1, Sq1, Sy_sym0, Ev1-2)
CA: (Kw1, Sk1, Dc1, Pl0, Co0-1, Jd0, Cr0-1, Si1, Id0-1)

Object permanence emerging (Rp2). Basic associative learning (As1). Social smile, face preference (Si1). Reaching, grasping (Sk1). Babbling (Co0-1). Synaptic density peaking (Sy3-4 — maximum connectivity, before pruning sculpts it).

18 months

NH: (Nr-Full, Sy4, Og4, Ol3, Mb4, Td-Full)
CS: (Rp2-3, Ct2, As1-2, Sq1-2, Sy_sym2-3, Ev2)
CA: (Kw1-2, Sk1-2, Dc1, Pl1, Co2, Jd0, Cr1, Si1-2, Id1)

VOCABULARY EXPLOSION — Sy_sym jumps from 0 to 2-3 in the space of months. First words → dozens → hundreds. Functional categories emerging (Ct2 — "food," "doggie," "ball"). Walking, simple tool use (Sk1-2). Emotional range expanding (Ev2). Self-recognition in mirror emerging (Id1).

This is the FASTEST substrate transition in the entire trajectory — Sy_sym0→Sy_sym3 in ~18 months. No other primitive moves this fast. Language acquisition IS the cognitive equivalent of the Cambrian explosion — a single capability that unlocks rapid development of everything else.

3 years

NH: (Nr-Full, Sy4, Og4, Ol3, Mb4, Td-Full)
CS: (Rp3, Ct2-3, As2, Sq2, Sy_sym3, Ev2-3)
CA: (Kw2, Sk2, Dc1-2, Pl1-2, Co2-3, Jd1, Cr2, Si2, Id1-2)

Relational representations (Rp3). Pretend play (Cr2). Theory of mind beginning (Si2). Simple narratives ("and then... and then..."). Grammatical sentences but not yet recursive embedding.

7 years

NH: (Nr-Full, Sy4-Full, Og4, Ol3-4, Mb4, Td-Full)
CS: (Rp3-4, Ct3, As2-3, Sq3, Sy_sym4, Ev3)
CA: (Kw2-3, Sk2-3, Dc2, Pl2-3, Co3, Jd2, Cr2-3, Si3, Id2-3)

Critical periods closing — Sy_sym reaching 4 (combinatorial grammar, approaching recursive). Abstract categories emerging (Ct3 — "same/different," "fair/unfair"). Planning multi-step activities (Sq3, Pl2-3). Social evaluation active (Ev3 — empathy, fairness judgments). Reading and writing acquisition (leveraging If-Full and Ks-Full in context).

14 years

NH: (Nr-Full, Sy-Full, Og4-Full, Ol4, Mb4-Full, Td-Full)
CS: (Rp4, Ct3-4, As3, Sq3-4, Sy_sym4-Full, Ev3-4)
CA: (Kw3, Sk3, Dc3, Pl3, Co3-4, Jd2-3, Cr3, Si3, Id3)

Prefrontal cortex maturing. Abstract reasoning (Rp4, Ct3-4). Analogical thinking (As3). Identity formation active (Id3). Beginning to access specialized knowledge systems (leveraging Ks4 in context).

25 years (fully developed)

NH: (Nr-Full, Sy-Full, Og-Full, Ol-Full, Mb-Full, Td-Full)
CS: (Rp-Full, Ct-Full, As-Full, Sq-Full, Sy_sym-Full, Ev-Full)
CA: (Kw3-4, Sk3, Dc3-4, Pl3-4, Co4, Jd3, Cr3, Si3-4, Id4)
CE participation: (Pr3-4, Ex3-4, Tr3-4, Dv-contrib, Cd3-4, Gv-participant, Te4, Sc-contrib, Ct_conn-Full)

Full neural hardware maturation (prefrontal complete by ~25). Full cognitive substrate. Architecture at individual-specific levels (not all at Full — reflects personal development, education, interests). Full cultural ecosystem participation.

3.2 The ontogenetic trajectory summary

AgeWhat's moving fastestRate limiter
0-6moNH maturation (synaptic, oscillatory)Biology (developmental timing)
6-18moSy_sym (vocabulary explosion)Neural maturation + social input
18mo-3yrCt, As, Sq (categories, associations, sequences)Experience + language bootstrapping

7-14yrCt, As (abstract), Pl, Jd (planning, judgment)Prefrontal maturation
14-25yrFull CS, CA specialization, CE participationPrefrontal completion + social opportunity

3.3 What the ontogenetic trajectory reveals

The Sy_sym explosion at 18 months is the defining event. Sy_sym goes from 0 to 3 in ~18 months — faster than any other transition in either the civilizational or ontogenetic trajectory. Language acquisition is FRONT-LOADED in human development, which makes sense given the composite gate analysis: Sy_sym unlocks everything above it, so getting it online early maximizes the time available for architecture development.

Neural hardware LEADS cognitive substrate by ~2-3 years. The brain is anatomically near-complete at birth (Nr-Full, Og4, Td-Full) but the cognitive substrate is at floor. The substrate grows INTO the hardware's capability space over years. This lag is the same pattern we saw in the static manifestations but now with temporal resolution.

Context is inherited, not developed. A child born in 2025 inherits Cx-Full (digital infrastructure, universal knowledge access, global connectivity). A child born in 5000 BCE inherits Cx = (Rb2, If2, Ks1). SAME ontogenetic trajectory of NH and CS, RADICALLY different CA development because the context provides different scaffolding. A modern child reaches Kw3 partly because Ks-Full context provides searchable knowledge; a Neolithic child reaches Kw3 through decades of oral transmission.

Cultural ecosystem participation is the LAST thing to develop. Children are CONSUMERS of the cultural ecosystem for ~15-20 years before becoming net PRODUCERS. The developmental lag from substrate to architecture to ecosystem participation mirrors the civilizational lag from substrate to ecosystem development. Ontogeny recapitulates the SSA build-up sequence.

4. Cross-trajectory comparison

4.1 What moves in each trajectory

DimensionCivilizational (100 Kya → now)Ontogenetic (0 → 25 years)
Neural hardwareSTATIC (all Full from Epoch 1)MATURES (0→Full over 0-25 years)
Cognitive substrateSTATIC (all Full from Epoch 1)DEVELOPS (0→Full over 0-25 years)
Cognitive architectureSTATIC average, rising max and distributionDEVELOPS (0→individual ceiling over 0-25 years)
Cultural ecosystemDEVELOPS (attractor 1 → near-Full)PARTICIPATION increases (0→contributing member)
ContextDEVELOPS (Rb1→Full, Ks1→Full)INHERITED (static for individual, changes across generations)

The key insight: Civilizational development happens in Context + Cultural Ecosystem. Individual development happens in NH + CS + CA + CE-participation. The two trajectories are ORTHOGONAL — they move different dimensions.

But they INTERACT: the context that civilizational development produces (If-Full, Ks-Full) becomes the inherited platform for individual development. Each generation's individuals develop within the context that all prior generations accumulated. The ratchet turns ACROSS generations through context accumulation.

4.2 The three timescales

TimescaleWhat changesDurationMechanism
EvolutionaryNeural hardware, cognitive substrate ceiling10⁵-10⁶ yearsGenetic evolution (gene-culture coevolution)
CivilizationalContext, cultural ecosystem10²-10⁴ yearsCultural accumulation, institutional development
OntogeneticIndividual NH, CS, CA, CE-participation10⁰-10¹ yearsBiological maturation + cultural learning

The three timescales are NESTED: evolutionary change sets the species-level ceiling; civilizational development fills the space below that ceiling; individual development fills the individual's space within the civilizational context.

Each timescale operates through a different mechanism:

4.3 The acceleration pattern

Epoch transitionDurationContext triggerKs-Tr feedback?
0→1 (symbolic)~200,000 yearsSubstrate maturationNo — pre-feedback
1→2 (agricultural)~90,000 yearsRb1→Rb2Weak (Ks1 → oral accumulation slow)
2→3 (urban/literate)~5,000 yearsKs1→Ks2 (writing)ACTIVATES feedback loop
3→4 (pre-modern)~4,500 yearsKs2→Ks3 (printing)Feedback accelerating
4→5 (industrial)~300 yearsRb3→Rb4 (fossil fuels)Feedback strong
5→6 (digital)~170 yearsKs→Full (internet)Feedback maximum

Duration of transitions: 200Ky → 90Ky → 5Ky → 4.5Ky → 300y → 170y. Each transition is FASTER. The Ks-Tr feedback loop activates at Epoch 3 (writing) and accelerates every subsequent transition.

Prediction: if the pattern holds, the NEXT major transition should be even faster (<100 years? <50?). The question is what context primitive moves next. Candidates:

5. What the trajectories teach us

5.1 The chain's temporal predictions hold

Both trajectories confirm the build-up ordering predicted by the dependency structures:

The build-up order predicted by the Hasse walks matches BOTH the historical and developmental timelines.

5.2 Context is the causal variable for civilizational differences

Civilizational trajectory confirms: same biology + different context → different cultural outcome. The three independent context roots (Rb, Gs, Th) determine WHICH path through the cultural ecosystem lattice a civilization takes. The Rb and Ks chains drive the major transitions.

5.3 The Ks-Tr feedback loop is the acceleration mechanism

The civilizational trajectory shows a clear acceleration pattern that activates when Ks2 (writing) connects knowledge stock to transmission technology. Each subsequent Ks transition is faster because the feedback loop strengthens: more knowledge → better transmission → more knowledge → better transmission.

5.4 Individual development is context-amplified

The same ontogenetic trajectory (NH→CS→CA→CE-participation) produces different architecture outcomes depending on inherited context. Modern context (Ks-Full, If-Full) amplifies what individual development can achieve — not by changing the substrate, but by providing richer scaffolding for architecture development.

5.5 Governance lags and always will

Governance (Gv) consistently lags behind other cultural ecosystem primitives because it requires coordinating the current-scale population, which is always larger than the scale governance was designed for. This lag is STRUCTURAL, not contingent — it follows from governance requiring Cd (coordination) at the full community scale, and coordination always trails behind technological capability.
