Methodology Cross-Arrangement Coupling

Status: Findings document for the Sc=3 sustained cross-arrangement coupling pass on strategic-analysis methodologies.

Why this exists: The earlier methodology-landscape pass (methodology-landscape.md) positioned 13 strategic-analysis methodologies in the methodology arrangement (their analytical structure). Per user observation, "these are also cultural artifacts that get exchanged and moved through the cognitive architectures and the cultural ecosystems" — methodologies have a SECOND structural position in the cognition arrangement (their cultural-artifact role). This pass authored that second position for each of the 13 methodologies and rendered the cross-arrangement coupling.

This is the first empirically-rendered Sc=3 sustained cross-arrangement coupling case in the project. Previously only Sc=4 single-event coupling (the developer-keypress event) was demonstrated. The methodology landscape provides 13 simultaneous Sc=3 coupling cases — each methodology coupling its analytical structure (methodology arrangement) with its cultural-artifact identity (cognition arrangement) over decades.

Findings

1. Inverse correlation between analytical depth and cultural adoption — confirmed

The Pearson signal is largely driven by SPA's extreme position (depth=94 vs adoption=9). Among the 12 externals alone, the inverse signal is weaker but still present: highest-adoption methodologies (SWOT, DMAIC, Five Forces, OKRs) all have depth ≤ 15. The deepest external (Wardley, depth=22) has lower adoption than several less-deep methodologies.

This is the layering-trap-for-methodologies pattern: methodologies optimized for analytical depth pay a cultural-adoption cost.

2. Positive correlation between depth and cognitive demand — confirmed

Methodologies with more analytical primitives also impose more cognitive load on their users. This is mechanically expected (more primitives → more to learn) and explains part of the depth-vs-adoption inverse correlation: high cognitive demand suppresses cultural transmission breadth.

3. Three structural zones in the cross-arrangement plane

4. Specific instances of the cultural-ecosystem accretion pattern

Per Paper 6's landscape analysis of the entity arrangement, ecosystems can mask substrate gaps via accretion. The same pattern shows up here:

The two methodologies ANCHOR the inverse correlation. SWOT optimizes for cognitive accessibility and mass transmission at the cost of structural depth. SPA optimizes for structural depth and cross-domain analytical power at the cost of cultural reach.

6. Wardley is the structural inflection

Wardley (depth=22, adoption=17) sits in a small "depth-over-reach" zone with SPA. Among the 12 externals, it has the most analytical depth and one of the lowest cultural-ecosystem positions. This is consistent with the prior finding that Wardley is the closest external methodology to ours — both are paying the depth cost.

7. The cognitive-architecture demand profile is a second axis worth tracking

The three axes (depth × adoption × cog-demand) decompose into distinct patterns:

What this means structurally

This pass demonstrates Sc=3 sustained cross-arrangement coupling as a paper-grade analytical move, not just a theoretical category. The methodology landscape provides 13 simultaneous coupling cases that share a common shape:

Each methodology occupies positions in BOTH (a) the methodology arrangement (analytical structure of how to use it) AND (b) the cognition arrangement (cultural artifact in social use). The two positions co-determine the methodology's destiny.

The discovery is that depth and adoption are inversely coupled across this set of 13 instances. This is structurally identical to the substrate-ecosystem disconnect finding from the cognition-arrangement landscape (Paper 11's empirical chapter): the substrate evolves slowly while ecosystem accretes around it. Here: analytical depth (methodology-arrangement substrate-equivalent) is sparse while cultural ecosystem accretes around the methodologies that are most accessible.

For Paper 11, this is a paper-figure-grade artifact. The Sc=3 sustained-coupling section that was sketched but not built before now has a working empirical demonstration with 13 instances and a measured correlation.


What this means for the project

  1. The Sc=3 sustained-coupling sketch (sketch-sc3-sustained-coupling.md) is partly closed. The methodology-landscape coupling is one concrete instantiation of Sc=3 sustained coupling. The other planned instantiation — coupled biology+cognition ontogenesis (a developer's career) — remains as future work.

  2. The cross-arrangement-coupling architecture is empirically validated. The schema (positions across multiple arrangements, coupling annotations, convergence claims) supports both Sc=4 single-event coupling (developer-keypress) and Sc=3 sustained coupling (methodology landscape). One schema, two scope levels.

  3. Paper 11's empirical chapter gains a third major section. Currently has: regime taxonomy + cross-arrangement coupling (Sc=4 keypress) + calibration. Now adds: methodology-landscape coupling as a Sc=3 sustained-coupling case study. The empirical chapter is now substantially complete.
